Brachioplasty and cruroplasty are reconstructive and aesthetic surgery procedures that reshape a patient’s arms (brachioplasty) and thighs (cruroplasty) by removing excess tissue after major weight loss.
How do they work?
Following major weight loss (often after gastric bypass surgery), the skin and subcutaneous tissue covering the limbs, particularly the arms and thighs, lose elasticity and become functionally and aesthetically compromised (difficulty in everyday activities, such as walking and running, dressing, etc.). Brachioplasty (reshaping or ‘lifting’ the arms) and cruroplasty (reshaping or ‘lifting’ the thighs) remove excess tissue and ‘stretch’ the skin around the limb. The resulting vertical scars are positioned on the inside of the arm and thigh so that they are less visible.
Brachioplasty and cruroplasty improve the function and appearance of the arms and thighs, making it possible to wear close-fitting clothes and avoiding the chafing and bulk resulting from excess skin on the limbs. The resulting scars, although present along the entire length of the limb, are concealed by their position on the inner side.
