What is breast reduction?
Breast reduction is an aesthetic reconstruction of the breasts and consists in reducing the size of breasts that are too large in proportion to the chest. Excessively heavy breasts can lead to complaints of various kinds, such as annoying back and joint pain, which can negatively affect everyday life. This is why it is important to intervene surgically with the aim of improving the patient’s quality of life.
How does breast reduction work?
Breast reduction consists in the removal of glandular and fatty tissue to re-proportioning the breasts, reducing their size. General anaesthesia is performed before surgery and the procedure lasts about three hours.
Incisions are made using one of two main techniques:
- pure vertical
- inverted T-shaped
The type of incision is agreed upon with the patient before surgery.
A small drain is inserted at the end of the procedure to prevent haematoma and the breasts are bandaged for 24 hours.

Breast reduction is not only an aesthetic surgical procedure but also, and above all, a functional one, as it allows the patient to solve the problems caused by the excessive weight of the breasts on the neck and back.
