For congenital reasons or due to the passage of time, the tissues around the eyes can contribute to making us look tired. There is often excess skin in the upper eyelid, called dermatocalasis, which droops down over the mobile part of the eyelid. In some cases this is associated with the protrusion of retro-orbital fat, contributing to the puffy appearance of the periorbital area. Blepharoplasty is an aesthetic surgical procedure to counteract this type of problem, helping to completely rejuvenate the eyes.
How does blepharoplasty work?
There are three types of blepharoplasty:
Upper blepharoplasty Upper blepharoplasty involves removing skin and any excess fat to lighten the eyelid and consequently the eyes. The procedure lasts one and a half hours and anaesthesia is performed locally, with or without sedation. It is carried out on an outpatient basis and a return to social life is expected within five days.
Lower blepharoplasty Lower blepharoplasty is performed on patients with retro-orbital fat protrusion, generally known as “bags”, and may also involve the removal of excess skin. In this case, lower blepharoplasty can be performed with an external scar, hidden in the lash line, to remove excess fat and skin. The procedure lasts two and a half hours and is performed under general anaesthesia. In this case too, admission is on an outpatient basis and recovery time of five days is expected.
Trans-conjunctival blepharoplasty For younger patients or those with no excess skin, an internal incision, hidden in the conjunctival side of the eyelid, is made. This operation is called trans-conjunctival blepharoplasty and avoids any visible scarring on the eyelid.
Blepharoplasty is a precise and meticuloussurgical procedure that considerably brightens the eyes and rejuvenates the eyelids, completely changing the face and making it look incredibly younger. What are you waiting for? Seek the help of a professional and make the most of your eyes.
