After considerable weight loss, after gastric bypass surgery for example, the skin and subcutaneous tissue on the back and abdomen often lose elasticity and become functionally and aesthetically compromised, making it difficult for the patient to carry out everyday activities such as walking, running, prolonged sitting and dressing. The body-lift is a surgical technique that reshapes the lower torso area. There are two types of body-lift: upper and lower. What distinguishes them are the areas to be operated on.
How does the body-lift work?
Lower body lift
The lower body-lift is both a reconstructive and aesthetic procedure to remove excess tissue and “tighten” the skin surface in the lower back and abdominal areas. The resulting scar is positioned horizontally around the entire circumference of the body, above the intergluteal fold at the back and between the pubis and the navel at the front (like an abdominoplasty, but circumferential), and is concealed by panties.
Upper body-lift
The upper body-lift removes excess tissue and ‘stretches’ the skin surface on the back and chest. The resulting scar is positioned horizontally around the entire circumference of the body, at the height of the shoulder blades at the back and extending into the inframammary fold at the front, and is concealed by a bra in women. his can be combined with mastopexy, with or without implants, in women.
The upper or lower body lift procedure is able to reshape the patient’s silhouette, restoring elasticity and tone to the abdomen and back.
